    MOH Launches Malaria Vaccine for Children in Gbarpolu County

    ‎Bopolu City, Gbarpolu County-October 4, 2025-The Ministry of Health (MOH), in collaboration with several partners, has officially launched the malaria vaccine in Gbarpolu County.

    ‎The historic event took place at the Emirates Liberia Hospital on October 3, 2025.

    ‎This initiative aims to protect children between 5 months to 15 months from malaria, a disease that has plagued Liberia for years.

    ‎Background

    ‎Malaria has been a significant health challenge in Liberia and globally, with children under five years old being disproportionately affected.

    ‎In 2024, the country received its first shipment of 112,000 doses of the RTS, S malaria vaccine, marking a significant milestone in the fight against the disease.

    ‎The vaccine’s introduction is expected to save countless lives and reduce the burden of malaria on the healthcare system.

    ‎In Liberia, the malaria vaccine will be administered free of charge to eligible children according to the Ministry of Health.

    ‎During the launching event, Siaffa Willie, the health Promotion Focal Person of the Gbarpolu County Health Team said that trained health workers are being dispatched to communities to ensure easy access to the vaccine for families who may not be able to reach health facilities.

    ‎The Ministry of Health is working with partners such as the Red Cross, Catholic Relief Service, and UNICEF to ensure the success of the program.

    ‎A total of 5,480 doses have been sent to Gbarpolu County, and the Ministry has pledged to work diligently to achieve the program’s goals according to the Gbarpolu County Health Officer Dr. Kesellebsh Goyah.

    ‎”We will work diligently to make sure the program achieves its goals of saving children’s lives,” said Mr. Karim Kamara, Child Survival Focus Person of the Gbarpolu County Health Team.

    ‎The malaria vaccine project was initially rolled out in six counties: Grand Gedeh, River Cess, Sinoe, Grand Kru, River Gee, and Maryland County.

    ‎The new phase of the project seeks to expand coverage to the remaining nine counties, including Gbarpolu.

    ‎This expansion is expected to further reduce malaria prevalence in Liberia and protect more children from the disease.
