Monrovia, Liberia-Tuesday, November 11, 2025- The Liberia Telecommunications Authority has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the country’s telecom sector, citing the need for urgent reforms to break the longstanding duopoly held by MTN and Orange.

LTA Chairperson Clarence Massaquoi emphasized the importance of introducing a third telecom operator to promote competition and improve services.

According to an LTA release, a critical issue affecting voice calls between Lonestar Cell MTN and Orange Liberia subscribers has been resolved following an emergency meeting between technicians from both companies and the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA).

The disruption, caused by interconnectivity equipment decommissioning issues, resulted in voice calls being wrongly terminated on each other’s networks. To restore proper connectivity, the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) will utilize off-peak hours to rectify the situation.

At a meeting held at the LTA Headquarters Tuesday, November 11, 2025, technicians from both service providers acknowledged the disruption and agreed on a solution.

In order to prevent similar issues in the future, both networks have committed to informing the LTA prior to conducting decommissioning exercises.

The LTA’s oversight ensured a swift resolution, enabling subscribers to enjoy uninterrupted services. The collaboration demonstrates the industry’s commitment to providing reliable services.

Subscribers are advised to expect possible service adjustments during off-peak hours as the networks work to finalize the repairs.

Implementing a device registration system based on International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers to reduce fake phones and improve network reliability, exploring public-private partnerships to empower Liberia’s state-owned telecom company, LTC, and make it a viable alternative to MTN and Orange.

LTA Chair Clarence Massaquoi’s call for reforms resonates with the growing demand for better telecom services in Liberia. With a growing population and increasing demand for digital services, the need for a robust and reliable telecom infrastructure has never been more pressing.

The LTA’s efforts to promote competition and improve services are expected to have a significant impact on the country’s economic development and digital inclusion.
