Monrovia, Liberia–Friday, November 21,2025–The Ministry of Mines and Energy, with support from the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), through the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Ministry of Mines and Energy has begun a four-day intensive early warning training for staff of the Liberia Hydrological Service (LHS) at the Ministry’s central office in Monrovia. This exercise is part of Pillar-2 of the Early Warning for All Initiative of the WMO.
The training is basically intended to build the capacity of water resource engineers and technicians in observing, monitoring, and forecasting early warning to produce data, analyze, and advance solutions significant to mitigating the impacts of disasters such as flooding, among others. Facilitators for the training exercise are specialists in water resource management from the Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency (NIHSA), which partners with Liberia in knowledge-sharing and collectivizing experiences in adopting best practice policies and projects implementation.
Speaking to the participants in special remarks at the start of the training on Wednesday, November 20, 2025, the Acting Minister of Mines and Energy, Eudora Blay-Pritchard, urged staff of the Hydrological Service (LHS) to take the initiative seriously and focus on every aspect of the four days undertaking in order to enhance their knowledge in the water resources management sector. Acting Minister Blay-Pritchard placed strong emphasis on retention of the knowledge being acquired and asserted that as flooding disasters continue to challenge Liberia – mainly coastal counties, it is important for Liberia to equip sector professionals to assist the government in analysis that recommend better problem solving methodologies.
She commended the World Meteorological Organization for providing Liberia this training opportunity which was made possible through funding assistance from Swedish International Development Agency. In recognizing the leadership roles played by the current Director of the Liberia Hydrological Service, Wynitta Gwaikolo-Mayson, and her predecessor, Anthony Kullie, Acting Minister Blay-Pritchard admonished them to remain steadfast in identifying programs that will improve the output of the hydrological bureau of the Mines and Energy Ministry.
In separate remarks, Liberia Geological Survey Director, Anthony Kullie, and Hydrological Service Director, Wynitta Gwaikolo-Mayson, urged the participants to embrace the opportunity given them to acquire advanced knowledge in detecting early warning and broadening their scope of understanding water analysis and other hydrometric activities. Ayuba Mohammed from the Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency is the lead Facilitator of the training which ends on Monday, November 4, 2025, during which participants will make presentations and be certificated.
