Barclayville City, Grand Kru County |Feb. 16, 2026|What began as a triumphant campaign at the National County Sports Meet has now shifted into a tense standoff, as outstanding payments to players and vendors threaten to overshadow Grand Kru’s successful run to the football finals.

County Development Officer Joe Sekpeh has publicly acknowledged the county’s financial obligations, revealing that despite significant backing during the tournament, several players and service providers remain unpaid.

The county is reportedly awaiting a balance of US$5,000 from the Ministry of Youth & Sports, along with an additional US$5,000 said to have been pledged as a donation to participating counties by ArcelorMittal.

These funds, according to Sekpeh, are critical to closing the financial gap.

However, frustration among team members appears to be growing.

Sources indicate that some players are considering staging a peaceful protest and taking their concerns to the media and social platforms in a bid to draw attention to the delayed payments.

The development has also exposed internal strains, with reports that some stakeholders have been unresponsive to calls for meetings aimed at resolving the issue.

The lack of coordinated engagement has fueled concerns about accountability and collective responsibility.

Analysts say the unfolding situation highlights the financial vulnerability counties often face after major sporting events—where ambition and performance sometimes outpace available funding.

Sekpeh has urged calm and solidarity, stressing that the outstanding obligations belong to Grand Kru County as a collective entity, not to any individual officeholder. He appealed to stakeholders to demonstrate the same unity that propelled the county to the finals and to work together toward settling the debts.

As the county works to secure the promised funds, attention now turns to how swiftly authorities and partners can respond to prevent further escalation and protect the morale of athletes who carried Grand Kru’s banner on the national stage.

Meanwhile, it is important to note that Grand Kru is one of the most successful teams in the history of the Liberia National County Sports Meet, with 5 titles to their name as of early 2026.Contextually, the team is known for its strong, traditional style of play and represents the southeastern region of Liberia.
