Phebe, Bong County | Feb. 24, 2026 | As healthcare remains a paramount in maintaining a healthy nation and people, several aggrieved health workers at the Phebe Hospital has begun a ‘Go slow action’ resulting in both delivery of essential healthcare delivery services and needy patients being abandoned.

Phebe is one of the biggest referral Hospitals in Bong County but also across the entire country, which has been catering to thousands of residents from Bong and further afield including neighboring countries.

On Monday, February 23, 2023 the aggrieved health workers met the Civil Service Agency boss Dr. Josiah Joekai, the County administration and Ministry of Health officials among others at the hospital to find means of amicably resolving the situation.

The meeting was expected to address a series of long-standing grievances raised by health workers, including salary disparities, employment benefits, poor working conditions, and concerns surrounding employment status for several staff members.

Dr. Joekai however called on health workers to remain calm as government and partners are presently engaged in an honest effort to address their grievances instead of staging protest and abandoning the hospital cum patients whose health is currently at risk.

“Your action has the propensity to affect the health status of admitted patients and we are appealing to you to disengage and allow us to speedily address your concerns. Let’s not endanger the life of those who are counting on us to care for them.”

Unfortunately and contrary to from the meeting’s outcome, it was observed today, Tuesday, February 24, 2024 that the aggrieved workers have abandoned the hospital; thereby compelling some of the previously admitted patients relatives to leave with their people.

The situation at the hospital has become an emergency issue in the County, with citizens calling on government to urgently see reason and address the concern of the aggrieved nurses thus bringing the ongoing protest to a halt and citizens don’t have to lose their lives.

According to the head of the Phebe Employee Association, Mr. Moses D. David, says their actions will send a “Clear unambiguous message” to the Government of Liberia to address their concerns as soon as possible.

The action taken by the aggrieved health workers at the Phebe Hospital has ignited fear among residents of the County and neighboring counties, who usually rely on Phebe for their healthcare delivery needs.

Meanwhile, some of the citizens who spoke to Rural Reporters Bong County Correspondent, expressed sadness over the decision of the aggrieved health workers, owing to the fact that, patients at the hospital stand in urgent of their presence in order to recover from their respective illnesses. Those concerned citizens want government speedily intervene and bring the situation a logical and peaceful conclusion.
