… As  Facility About To be Commissioned Soon

By: Keith Morrison | Contributing Writer

Monrovia, Liberia |March 15, 2026|The Minister of Mines and Energy, Hon. R. Matenokay Tingban, has expressed firm impressions about the pace of work being done at the Mount Coffee hydro power facility, especially the 20megawatts solar power [farm] facility which is nearing commissioning by the President of Liberia, H.E Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr.

Touring facilities of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) on Friday, March 13, 2026, the Mines and Energy Minister saw first-hand, progress the national power utility along with the Contractors have made in getting the 20megawatts solar power facility ready for injecting additional amount of electricity into the national power grid. Contractors informed Minister Tingban that the solar plant is almost completed and that they have been testing the facility to determine its efficacy, assuring the Minister that the plant will shortly be ready to scale up Liberia’s energy expansion.

During the day-long assessment tour, Minister Tingban inspected all 30,000 solar panels that have been installed at Mount Coffee, as well as the power inverters, warehouse, offices, and other technical facilities of the plant, and concluded his tour with ascertaining the level of progress being made in repairing ‘UNIT-1’ – the damaged turbine of the Mount Coffee Hydro Power Plant. Liberia Electricity Corporation authorities informed the Minister that Contractors are rapidly progressing with the repair. Of the four turbines the Mount Coffee Hydro Power Plant operates, Minister Tingban gathered that two (UNIT 3 & 4) are currently operational – running with routine intervals in consonance with the Bushrod Thermal Plant, and the CLSG (Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea) power supply from neighboring Ivory Coast.

The Minister also gathered that the second turbine – ‘UNIT-2’ is undergoing annual maintenance, and he expressed impression that the technical annual maintenance work on the Country’s second electricity turbine is being done by Liberian electrical Engineers. The assessment tour of the LEC facilities culminated into the Mines and Energy Minister assuring the Corporation that he will increase the Ministry’s efforts to Cabinet and the President’s Office that the Liberia Electricity Corporation needs more budgetary support to enable the national power utility provide the requisite level of services to drive economic activities.

Speaking on behalf of TRANSCO-CLSG, the Chief Executive Officer, Jerry Taylor, responded positively to Minister Tingban’s concern that much of Liberia’s challenges in the electricity sector currently has to do with transportation of the electric power which is ‘Transmission’. According to Mr. Taylor, the CLSG is rightly positioned to collaborate with the Liberian Government in handling transmission of the electricity the Country’s national grid produces.

According to a Ministry of Mines and Energy release, the Sector Lead – Minister R. Matenokay Tingban, was accompanied by the Deputy Minister for Energy, Charles Umehai, and the Assistant Minister for Energy, Oliver S. Gbegbe. They were taken on the guided tour of the LEC facilities by the Corporation’s Deputy Managing Director for Operations, Thomas Gonkerwon, and the Deputy Managing Director for Technical Services, Mohammed Sow, both of whom ably represented the Managing Director, Mohammed Sheriff, who was on another crucial national duty. The field visit also included technical power-point presentations by LEC’s technical staff that gave the Minister full insight of the overall operational capacity of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC).
