Barclayville City, Barclayville District, Grand Kru County |March 21, 2026| (Grand Kru TV) – The Grand Kru County Detachment of the Liberia National Police is conducting an investigation into an accident that occurred at a local gold mining camp in Bolloh, Barfowean; which led to the tragic deaths of two individuals.
Police authorities revealed that on March 18, 2026, Franco Togba, a 45-year-old resident of Sasstown, reported that his brother, Richard Saba, had been involved in a fatal accident at a gold mining site in Barfowean, Dorbor District.
Based on the information received, the authorities of the Liberia National Police dispatched a team of officers, led by Superintendent Leon Q. Acquaah, the Commander of the Crime Services Department in Grand Kru County, to the scene.
Upon arriving at the crime scene, police investigations revealed that the victim, Richard Saba, was found lying face down in a large gold pit. From this point, the investigation commenced.
Several local residents informed police investigators that the second victim, Stephen Doe, was urgently transported to a nearby clinic in Nyankunpo, Bolloh Statutory District. Unfortunately, he was subsequently pronounced dead by medical personnel.
Five individuals have been identified as persons of interest and are currently undergoing investigation. They include Lawrence Williams, aged 29; Jerry Chebortoh, aged 44; and Patrick N. Weah, aged 29, all hailing from the Barfowean community.
The individuals of interest informed the Liberia National Police that they were employed at a gold mining site owned by S. Taryee Doe and Jerome N. Coleman. During their shift, they took a break to eat near a pile of dirt. At that moment, the dirt unexpectedly shifted and collapsed onto the two victims. .
They further explained that when the victims fell into the deep mining pit, they immediately began calling for help. Some of the mining workers promptly arrived at the scene to attempt a rescue. Despite the concerted efforts of the community members to extricate the victims from beneath the debris, unfortunately, they did not survive.
S. Taryee Doe and Jerome N. Coleman, proprietors of the mining sites, informed police authorities that they had received a phone call from several of their employees reporting that a landslide had occurred, resulting in two workers being trapped beneath the debris.
According to Doe and Coleman, they hurried to the location and found the victim, Richard Saba, dead. Meanwhile, the other victim, Stephen Doe, was transported to a nearby medical facility, where he was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
The district coroner convened a jury of fifteen men to conduct an examination of the victims’ remains.
They concluded that there was no evidence of foul play. Consequently, the victims’ families requested the release of the bodies for burial. The victims’ remains were subsequently handed over to their respective family members.
Meanwhile, the five individuals of interest have been taken to the Barclayville police station for further investigation.
