Foya District, March 24, 2026– A severe storm swept through Porluma town and its surrounding communities in Foya District yesterday, leaving a trail of destruction and displacing multiple families. Preliminary reports indicate that over 30 houses were damaged, with the town of Porluma bearing the brunt of the impact.
The unexpected heavy storm, which struck in the afternoon, caused significant structural damage to homes, rendering several families homeless. While authorities have confirmed there were no fatalities, the emotional and material toll on residents has been substantial.
Mr. Saah Taylor, the Town Chief of Porluma, expressed deep disappointment over the incident. “We are devastated by the extent of the damage,” he stated. “Many of our people have lost their shelters and are now struggling to find a place to stay. We urgently call for assistance—both from the government and humanitarian organizations—to support these victims in their time of need.”
Eyewitnesses and local assessments reveal that approximately 20 houses were damaged in Porluma alone. The neighboring towns of Koisu and Kporlornin also experienced storm damage, though to a lesser extent than Porluma.
Victims of the storm recounted their ordeal with visible distress. “We were not expecting this at all,” one resident explained through tears. “Some of our belongings and food supplies have been ruined. We appeal to the government to help us rebuild and recover as quickly as possible.”
Notably, this is the first recorded storm of such magnitude in Porluma, though other towns in the district have experienced similar weather-related damage in the past. The event has raised concerns about preparedness and resilience in the face of increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.
Local community leaders are organizing temporary shelter and relief efforts as they await external support. The district administration has been notified, and assessments are underway to determine the full scope of the damage and the necessary response.
As recovery begins, the people of Porluma and the affected towns remain hopeful for swift intervention to restore their homes and livelihoods.
