Eleven community radio stations have received brand new motorcycles to enhance their operations. The donation was made by Lofa County Senator Momoh Cyrus in fulfilment of a promise he made on January 1, 2025 during interaction with journalists across the county. The donation, among others, is intended to ease transportation burdens on journalists and enhance the general operations of media institutions in Lofa County.
The Lofa Senator said he decided to assist local media institutions in order to ease the transportation challenges they usually go through in their line of work. Thus, the senator added that he believed “the motorcycles will enhance the work of the media institutions across the county.”
Making the presentation, Chief of Staff of the office of Senator Cyrus, Arthur Kowah praised the media in Lofa for their hard work and said that the Senator is committed to partnering with the media for further engagement.
Media institutions that benefitted were: Voice of Lofa –Voinjama, Radio Kintoma-Voinjama, Radio, Radio Wologizi –Voinjama and radio Dengola. Others are, Radio Life and Strong FM; both of Zorzor City. For Foya City, Radio Makona, Radio Diompior and Radio Tambataikor respectively. Radio Harleyngee of Kolahun and Radio Vahun were also beneficiaries.
The recipients extended their thanks and appreciation to Senator Cyrus for his timely donation and promised to diligently serve the local population.
Amid the donation, political observers are of the opinion that while it is good for lawmakers to constructively engage with their constituency, it is becoming apparent that legislators have virtually become finance officers going around and distributing monies as if to say that is the only function of the nation’s legislators when in fact there are other cardinal responsibilities; which when adequately performed, the nation as a whole would stand to benefit so much.
They mentioned good lawmaking, oversight and representations as other key legislative functions that should not be ignored or abandoned at the detriment of individual cash distribution. They want monies intended for actual development to go towards impactful projects meant to benefit the collective interest of the general citizenry as opposed to individual pockets.
Meanwhile, media Institutions who received the bike appreciated Senator Momoh T. Cyrus for the donation, and called on others Lawmakers to do same for the Media in County.
In a shocking move, the Alternative Youth Radio (AYR) in Zorzor City has out rightly rejected the donation from Senator Cyrus on grounds that it conflicts with their policy on donation.
