The Speaker of the 55th National Legislature, Richard Nagbe Koon has pledged to build an incinerator to support JFK Medical Center’s waste disposal needs and to reroof the TNIMA building as part of his commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure.
Touring the facility on the morning of Monday, March 3, 2025, Speaker Koon emphasized that investing in healthcare is not optional but a national necessity, as the lack of proper medical services forces many Liberians to seek treatment abroad. He made it clear that modernizing JFK would enhance local healthcare delivery and reduce dependency on foreign medical referrals.
The Speaker seriously frowned at the hospital’s current state, referring to it as “unacceptable.” He revealed that JFK’s kitchen now relies on coal pots due to broken equipment; an issue he believes must be urgently addressed.
With the Fiscal Year 2025 budget standing at $880.7 million, including $98 million for public sector projects, Speaker Koon stressed that JFK must be prioritized. Last year, the hospital received $7.1 million, but he believes this amount must be significantly increased to transform JFK into a state-of-the-art facility that meets the needs of all Liberians, regardless of social status.
He promised to work with his colleagues to increase JFK’s budget to $20 million, ensuring that infrastructure improvements and other hospital challenges are adequately addressed.
Reaffirming the House’s commitment under his leadership, Speaker Koon assured JFK’s leadership that he will push for sustained investment in Liberia’s healthcare system, emphasizing that a strong medical infrastructure is key to national progress.
