Monrovia, Liberia-Thursday, May 22, 2025- In a significant move toward environmental preservation, Sinoe County Superintendent Peter Wleh Nyensuah, Wild Chimpanzee Foundation Country Director Dr. Annika Hillers on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 met President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr., to discuss possible means in addressing Potential Threats facing the Sarpo National Park.

Sinoe County Superintendent Peter Wleh Nyensuah and Wild Chimpanzee Foundation Country Director Dr. Annika Hillers pose for a shot with His Excellency Joseph N. Boakai, President of Liberia.

The high-level meeting according to a statement from the Sinoe’s Superintendent office centered on the growing threats of illegal mining and unauthorized human occupation within the park’s boundaries, a major issue that continue to jeopardize the ecological integrity of the country’s most critical biodiversity hotspots.

“Our discussion with His Excellency was productive and focused on the need for immediate and concrete legal actions to protect this vital natural heritage,” said Superintendent Nyensuah.

Superintendent Nyensuah said he’s optimistic that decisive steps will be taken to preserve Sarpo National Park for both current residents and future generations.

Established in 1983, the Sarpo National Park is the oldest in Liberia and is duly located in the southeastern region of Liberia; it is home to rare and endangered species and plays a crucial role in the country’s ecosystem.

Environmental abuse ongoing at the Sarpo National Park.

Conservationists and local authorities have raised alarms in recent months over increasing encroachments that threaten its survival.

Superintendent Nyensuah reaffirmed the county’s commitment to safeguarding the environment and expressed gratitude for the national government’s continued support to such mission.

“As custodians of our environment, we must act swiftly and decisively,” he emphasized.

The meeting is seen as a promising step in the national effort to strengthen conservation laws and enforcement in protected areas across Liberia as president Boakai assured hid government commitment to making possible intervention through those relevant authorities including the FDA.
