Lisbon, Portugal –Tuesday, May 27, 2025-His Excellency Dr. Teeko Tozay Yorlay, Sr., Liberia’s newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Portuguese Republic, on Monday, May 26,2025 presented his Letters of Credence to His Excellency Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of Portugal, marking the beginning of a renewed chapter in Liberia-Portugal relations.

Speaking at the Presidential Palace in Lisbon, Ambassador Yorlay expressed deep gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to him and his delegation upon their arrival from Paris. He delivered heartfelt greetings on behalf of His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, the Government, and the people of Liberia, conveying their admiration and goodwill to the Portuguese President, Government, and citizens.

Reflecting on the longstanding partnership between Liberia and Portugal, Ambassador Yorlay praised the enduring friendship built on mutual respect, democratic values, and shared global goals. He acknowledged Portugal’s pivotal role in supporting Liberia’s post-war recovery through the European Union, describing the relationship as a testament to what countries can achieve when united by a vision for peace and prosperity.

“With the launch of the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development under President Boakai’s leadership,” the Ambassador noted, “Liberia is charting a new course, prioritizing Agriculture, Roads, Rule of Law, Education, Sanitation, and Tourism. We see Portugal not only as a friend but as a potential partner in this national journey.”

Ambassador Yorlay extended a strong invitation to Portuguese investors and companies to explore opportunities in Liberia, especially in sectors aligned with Liberia’s development goals. He reaffirmed his commitment to deepening trade, education, cultural exchanges, and multilateral diplomatic cooperation.

Notably, he highlighted Liberia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, appealing to Portugal for its support in the upcoming June 3rd election. “President Boakai believes deeply in multilateralism and Liberia’s constructive role in global peace and security, values Portugal has long championed,” he stated.

Education also featured prominently in his message, with a call to expand scholarship opportunities for Liberian students in Portugal. While expressing appreciation for those already studying under EU-supported programs, the Ambassador pledged to work with Portuguese authorities to establish direct scholarship initiatives.

Though based in Paris, Ambassador Yorlay emphasized his unwavering commitment to his role in Portugal, stating:

“I pledge to serve with sincerity, dedication, and a shared vision for our people’s future. With your partnership, I believe we can raise the Liberia–Portugal relationship to new heights.”
