Grand Kru County – Police in Grand Kru County have announced the implementation of enhanced security measures, particularly at the Dorbor River crossing point in response to a concerning increase in drowning incidents in the area.

The Dorbor River crossing point is a vital passageway that connects Bolloh New Town in Grand Kru County to Greenville, the capital of Sinoe County, which serves as a crucial route for residents, but recent events have raised safety concerns.

Police Commander Clement Barlatt has reported that the increase in drowning cases appears to be associated with the rising water levels due to seasonal rains, which have rendered the river more risky for those using it to cross over from one side to another.

“Starting immediately, we will be deploying additional officers to monitor this crossing point closely, said Grand Kru County Police Commander Barlatt, when he released new security measures intended to ensure the safety of citizens and residents in that part of the country.

“We will also educate community members about the dangers of crossing the river during high water levels and provide alternative travel advice,” Barllatt added.

Last month, authorities of the Liberia National Police (LNP) reported at least three drowning cases incuding a 1-year-six-month-old victim identified as Sammy Karter, who allegedly got drown in the Dorbor River 2 June 2025.

On 20 June, police authorities also reported a drowning incident that occurred on the Dorbor River involving a 33-year-old male victim, Duyen Sumo, and the LNP report a third drowning case 25 June, disclosing that a 49-year-old, Sampson Walker, also drowned in the Dorbor River while trying to cross the river along with two others identified as Cooper Gaye and Kingston Tweh, when a float they were using to cross capsized. Bothe Gaye and Tweh survived.

It can be recalled that several incidents of drowning were reported to have occurred in the Dorbor River including a case that reportedly took place 27 October last year, when a 19-year-old pregnant woman, Precious Kantan and 16-year-old Joanna Targbe drowned in the river.

A 39-year-old, Moses William alias ZB, was also reported to have drowned in the Dorbor River last year

The Dorbor River is reported to be a major threat to economic growth and the lives of inhabitants of Grand Kru, especially citizens and residents of Nyankunpo Town, located Dorbor and Bolloh Statutory Districts respectively.

Police in Grand Kru County said they are also working alongside community leaders to announce stipulated time for crossing the river, and to also develop emergency response protocols in case of any unforeseen occurence.

According to Police officials, the focus will be on raising awareness of safety practices, such as traveling in group on float, using life jackets, and avoiding crossing the river during inclement weather conditions. Meanwhile, citizens and residents of Grand Kru, especially those from Bolloh and Dorbor Statutory Districts have launched an SOS call, pleading with partners for support, as well as members of the Grand Kru Legislative caucus, to allot funding in the National Budget to erect a bridge over the Dorbor River to create free and safe movement, and avoid further loss of lives in the area.
