River Gee County – Tuesday, July 29, 2025 – The 178th  Independence Day celebrations in Liberia for 2025 were characterized by an electrifying atmosphere as residents of Fish Town and nearby areas gathered in unprecedented numbers; indicating a remarkable change from past years.

The county capital was alive with expressions of patriotism and joy, as streets and entertainment venues overflowed with individuals eager to commemorate the significant occasion. As night fell, Fish Town resonated with a lively mix of sounds, pomp and pageantry.

The festivities began with an exciting local sports match at the Fish-Town unfinished sports field, attended by County Superintendent Mike T. Swengbeh. The day was followed by children’s photo-shoots and activities organized by the Fish-Town City Corporation, with support from the national government at the Fish Town City Hall, and bustling nightlife for adults in the city’s bars and streets filled with music and dance.

Throughout the day, the Liberia National Police River Gee detachment, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police, Theophilus T. Togba, conducted foot patrols throughout the community to ensure the safety of residents and property. Up to present, there has been no report of any criminal activity or arrest during the Independence Day celebrations up to reporting time.

“I’ve never seen the entertainment venues and streets so crowded in my six years living here, especially with the young people. The atmosphere is filled with laughter, unity, and happiness from our kids,” shared Fish Town resident Mr. Williams Johnson.

As night descended, celebrations moved to popular spots including Loyalty Guest House and Entertainment Center, Facebook, Gee Point, The Rock, and the Gee Place, as well as the streets, which were teeming with people.

Local musicians and DJs energized the night with upbeat tunes that fostered a sense of pride among residents. The festive ambiance drew crowds from all parts of the county and visitors from nearby regions.

Residents experienced a renewed sense of community and togetherness that had been lacking in previous years. “In past years, the celebrations felt somewhat subdued, but this year is different. There’s a greater sense of unity and joy; it feels like we’re all in this together,” said Joyce Tetay Wleh, a resident of Sarbo Sweaken, who was enjoying herself at a local entertainment venue during the celebrations.

“Tonight, we celebrate not just our freedom but also our potential as a people,” said local leader Josephus Wesseh, a retired educator in Fish Town. “Let’s keep working together to uplift our nation and secure a better future for our children.”

The joyful celebrations in Fish Town underscored the resilient spirit of the Liberian people, highlighting that strength lies in unity.

Despite the challenges faced by many Liberians, the pride shown during Independence Day brings hope for a brighter tomorrow for both River Gee County and the country as a whole.

People traveled from neighboring mining camps, and major towns, including Gbeapo Kanweaken, Joequieken, Sarbo Sweaken, Tuobo Gbarweliken, Glarro Freetown, and others to partake in the celebrations.
