Zwedru Grand Gedeh County –Monday, September 8, 2025-The ministry of internal Affairs on Friday September 5, 2025 appointed over 120 chiefs from across Grand Gedeh County.
The ceremony which was organized by the ministry of internal Affairs brought together chiefs, local authority, security apparatus and Assistant Minister of internal Affairs ended successfully.
The event was held to formally present appointment letters to selected local chiefs, confirming their positions in line with the Local Government Act of 2018.
According to county superintendent, Hon. Alex Chersia Grant; some letters served as reaffirmation for chiefs already in service, while others replaced leaders who have since passed away.
The Superintendent explained that the appointments follow Section 2.15 of the Local Government Act and will remain in effect until future local elections are conducted.
However, during the ceremony, chiefs raised concerns about not being placed on the government payroll. Many admitted they have been working voluntarily without pay for a very long time and appeal for the rectification said situation.
Addressing the issue the county Superintendent acknowledged and assured that efforts are underway to address to speedily the matter.
Equally making brief remarks at the ceremony, was the Deputy Minister for Research and Development Planning, Hon. Edward K. Mulbah assured the chiefs that a team from Monrovia will be visiting the county in the coming weeks to begin a re-documentation exercise.
According to him, this process will include re-profiling and biometric registration for those who previously participated in the ministry’s internal vetting.
Once the re-documentation and biometric process is completed, the payroll process for all chiefs would have been formalized in order for them to begin receiving their salaries accordingly.
The process leading to the recent distribution of letters involved the superintendent forwarding a resolution and list or names to the Minister of Internal Affairs, who then approved and signed the appointments.
Authorities are urging communities and constituents across the county to follow proper procedures if they wish to achieve similar outcomes regarding appointments and other administrative matters.
For now, the chiefs of Grand Gedeh await the re-documentation and payroll placement, hopeful that their long years of voluntary service will soon be rewarded with official cum regular monthly compensation.
