Grand Kru County, Liberia |March 21, 2026| After more than six years of setbacks, the Government of Liberia has renewed confidence in its healthcare agenda with the official dedication of the Domo Nimene Maternity Hospital in Sasstown.
Implemented through the Ministry of Health (Liberia) with support from the Government of Germany, the 60-bed facility signals a push by authorities to address long-standing gaps in maternal and child healthcare across southeastern Liberia.
The project was executed by Welthungerhilfe in collaboration with the Ministry.
While the completion of the hospital has been widely welcomed, the prolonged delay surrounding the project had raised concerns among citizens about implementation efficiency and access to critical health services during the waiting period.
Government officials, speaking at the dedication ceremony, acknowledged these concerns and stressed that lessons have been learned.
They emphasized that the completion of the facility reflects a renewed determination to deliver essential services, particularly in remote and underserved communities.
The Domo Nimene Maternity Hospital is equipped to provide key services including antenatal care, safe childbirth, postnatal care, and emergency obstetric treatment—services expected to significantly reduce maternal and infant mortality in the region.
Communities in Sasstown, along with surrounding districts such as Jloh, Forpoh, and Bolloh, stand to benefit directly, as the new facility reduces the need for long-distance travel in search of quality healthcare.
Authorities from the Grand Kru County Health Team described the project as both a milestone and a reminder of the need for timely delivery of public services.
They reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening partnerships and ensuring that future projects are completed more efficiently to meet the growing healthcare demands of the Liberian people.
