Monrovia, Liberia |February 2, 2026 | Liberia’s telecommunications sector is getting a major boost with a collaborative effort between the government, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the World Bank.
Chairperson Clarence Massaquoi of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority met with ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray in Abuja Nigeria to discuss improving digital infrastructure and connectivity in the region.
The partnership aims to deploy a second submarine cable, providing critical redundancy to the existing Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) system and enhancing internet reliability and speed.
The meeting focused on strengthening telecom infrastructure, harmonizing policies, and attracting investments.
Chairman Massaquoi also shared ARTAO/WATRA’s 2026 plans, aiming to boost digital development and inclusivity in the region.
The leaders’ explored ways to enhance telecommunication regulations, expand digital infrastructure, and create a more robust and inclusive market across ECOWAS countries.
Under the project, the LTA said the second submarine cable will provide reliable and resilient internet access to millions of citizens where Liberia’s digital economy is expected to receive a significant boost, driving socio-economic growth and job creation.
The project will enhance digital infrastructure across ECOWAS countries, promoting cross-border trade and financial integration.
