The Liberian Association of Michigan on March 31, 2026, held its annual “Birth Month Contest” as part of efforts to raise funds for the rehabilitation of its multipurpose hall in Detroit, Michigan, United States.

The program, which was conducted via Zoom, brought together members of the Liberian community in Michigan, supporters, and well-wishers. The virtual gathering was marked by prayers, community interaction, and financial contributions from participants who continue to support the work of the Association.

Speaking during the event, Planning Committee Chairperson, Angeline Perry emphasized the importance of the initiative.

“This hall is very important to our community. It is where we meet, celebrate, and support each other. Renovating it means strengthening our unity,” she said.

A major highlight of the event was the recognition of several long-serving members who have made significant contributions to the growth and sustainability of the organization. Those honored include Mr. Galakpa Maza Korkor Howard, Dr. Jerome Boakai, Mr. Harrison Duncan, Dr. Aloysius Hanson, Mr. Abraham Karva, Mr. Sam Rennie and Dr. Jewlee Tweh.

According to Ms. Perry, the recognition was intentional and timely. “These are some of our top contributors. They have given their time, resources, expertise and energy to this association for many years. As they are all retired, it is only right that we honor them,” she noted.

She described their contributions as “valuable and lasting,” noting that their commitment has helped to keep the association strong and relevant within the Liberian diaspora community.

    Background of the Association

The Liberian Association of Michigan is one of the oldest Liberian community organizations in the United States. Established in the early 1970s, the association was formed to bring together Liberians living in Michigan and to promote unity, cultural identity, and mutual support.

Over the past five decades, the association has remained active in organizing community events such as Liberia’s Independence Day celebrations, cultural programs, and social gatherings. It has also provided support to members in times of need, including during illness, bereavement, and other personal challenges.

During the 178th Independence Anniversary of Liberia, it organized a special commemorative program that brought together members of the diaspora and invited guests. The event featured Dr. Isaac E. Taggart Jr., as the keynote speaker. His participation highlighted the association’s growing relevance not only as a community body but also as a platform for national dialogue and engagement.

In addition, the association has played a role in helping newly arrived Liberians adjust to life in Michigan by offering guidance and community support.

The multipurpose hall, which is now undergoing efforts for reconditioning, has been a central place for many of these activities. It serves as a meeting point where members come together to discuss issues, celebrate their heritage, and strengthen community ties.

    Moving Forward

The March 29th fundraising event highlights the association’s continued commitment to development and community building. As older members begin to step aside, the organization is also focusing on encouraging the younger generation to ensure continuity.

Participants at the Zoom event expressed support for the rehabilitation project and reaffirmed their commitment to the growth of the association.

The Liberian Association of Michigan remains a key institution for Liberians in the diaspora, continuing to promote unity and preserve cultural identity while responding to the needs of its members.
