‎Guyanta Town, Gbarpolu County |March 5, 2026‎| A tragic incident has shaken the community of Guyanta in Bopolu District of Gbarpolu County, where a man in his late 60s, Pa Sumoru Kamara, was killed by an elephant on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.

‎According to reports, Kamara had gone to check his traps in the forest, about 4 hours walking distance from the town, and encountered a mother elephant.

‎His lifeless body was found with several bruises and visible marks of elephant attack, including waste and feces.

‎A coroner jury concluded that there was no foul play in his death.

‎Meanwhile, the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) and local authorities are urging citizens to take precautions as elephants are protected under Liberia’s wildlife conservation laws.

‎The incident has raised concerns among residents as elephants have been destroying farms in the area, and residents are calling on the FDA to take urgent and necessary action.

‎Right now, Citizens are frustrated: they can’t kill the elephants due to protection laws, but now an elephant has killed a citizen.

    ‎What will the FDA do?

‎Residents demand preventive measures and compensation for damages, recalling that eight people were recently fined $500 for killing an elephant in Bopolu District.
