Several women in Bomi County say they have been sidelined from a World Bank and the Government of Liberia backed $44.6 Million women’s empowerment program.
Women leaders of multiple village savings and loan associations across Bomi County have accused County Gender Coordinator Miatta Monger of excluding their groups from the empowerment initiative. They alleged that the recruitment process has been politicized, favoring certain individuals while leaving out established grassroots women organizations.
One women’s group leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said she had been sent by fellow members to seek clarity on their eligibility, but received unfavorable response from the Gender Coordinator.
“She told us the project is not for women in towns and villages, but for those in the city,” the leader recounted, noting that this contradicts earlier public messaging that suggested the initiative would prioritize rural inclusion.
The claim has sparked frustration among women in communities such as Kamada Town and beyond. Many say they had mobilized in anticipation of benefiting from the program, only to find themselves excluded without clear explanation.
“We feel ignored,” another group leader said. “These are the opportunities we’ve been waiting for to grow our businesses and support our families.”
Gender Coordinator, Madam Monger, in an interview via telephone, acknowledged that some communities, including Kamada Town, were not captured in the current phase of the project, adding that her recruitment process predated her appointment.
“I met the process already ongoing,” she explained, distancing herself from responsibility for the initial selection of beneficiaries.
Several women leaders disputed her account, claiming they have personally witnessed her involvement in recruitment activities. Some allege that participation in the project has been influenced by political affiliation; an accusation, RRNN could not confirmed
Meanwhile, the aggrieved women groups are urging the Government of Liberia and its international partners to investigate the implementation process in Bomi County and ensure transparency and fairness.
