Monrovia, Liberia |May 7, 2026 | After decades of dormancy, Sinoe County will revive its Founding Day and Homecoming celebration on July 9, 2026, in Greenville, organizers announced Wednesday.
The week-long festivities mark Sinoe’s admission into the Commonwealth of Liberia on July 9, 1838. The annual observance was halted following the 1980 military coup and remained suspended throughout Liberia’s fifteen year civil war.
In a press statement issued, the Steering Committee of Sinoe organizations in Liberia and the diaspora is leading the 2026 return. The committee is headed by Roosevelt Sackor, with Assistant Professor Richard S. Panton serving as Co-Chair and Tuhkan Tigbarsay Saywon as Secretary General.
This year’s homecoming will be held under the theme: “One County, One Future, One People.” Activities will run from July 2-9 and include sports competitions, cultural festivals, reconciliation dialogues, and the announcement of annual development projects.
According to the official press statement released May 6, the initiative began with an assessment visit to Sinoe by a designated team that consulted local government authorities and community stakeholders. The committee said it received “full endorsement” following those consultations.
A separate delegation also met with the Sinoe Legislative Caucus, which pledged to collaborate with the committee to ensure a successful celebration.
The Steering Committee outlined a detailed schedule for the homecoming:

Sinoe played a notable role in Liberia’s early statehood, serving as Secretary during the Constitutional Convention that led to Liberia’s independence on July 26, 1847.
The homecoming event Organizers are calling on all Sinoeans and friends of the county to participate and contribute to Sinoe’s growth and development.
To support fundraising, the committee has launched a “Pick-a-Date” initiative and is offering Homecoming T-shirts and caps for purchase.
The Steering Committee emphasized that the 2026 celebration aims to foster unity, reconciliation, and renewed commitment to the county’s future after years of conflict and disruption.
