|May 19, 2026 |The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Liberia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Portugal have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at strengthening diplomatic and political cooperation between the two countries.
The agreement was concluded by His Excellency Dr. Teeko Tozay Yorlay, Ambassador Extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Republic of Liberia to the Portuguese Republic, and Ambassador Helena Malcata, Director General of Foreign Policy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs on behalf of their respective governments.
Officials from both countries said the understanding reflects a shared commitment to deepen cooperation, promote mutual understanding, and support common interests at bilateral, regional, and international levels.
Under the agreement, Liberia and Portugal will establish a Political and Diplomatic Consultations Mechanism to improve communication and cooperation on important issues affecting both countries.
The mechanism will provide a structured platform for regular discussions, policy exchanges, and consultations on international developments and shared priorities.
Meetings under the arrangement are expected to take place every two years, alternating between Liberia and Portugal, with additional sessions possible when needed.
The consultations will be led by foreign affairs officials or their representatives and may include experts and other government officials depending on the topics being discussed.
The agreement also encourages study visits and exchanges between experts from both countries to promote knowledge-sharing and strengthen cooperation in specific areas of interest.
Officials said working groups may also be created to focus on special issues and provide recommendations to strengthen collaboration between the two nations.
Both Liberia and Portugal reaffirmed the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic relations and regular communication between their missions as part of efforts to promote cooperation, dialogue, and constructive engagement on regional and global matters.
