Zwedru City, Grand Gedeh County |May 27, 2026 | The Forestry Development Authority (FDA) Region 4 has destroyed more than LD$140,000 worth of bush meat from protected animal species in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County.
According to authorities, the bush meat was confiscated during a routine inspection carried out at the Kanneh Road Check Point on Monday, May 25, 2026.
Officials said the seizure forms part of ongoing efforts to protect endangered wildlife and discourage the illegal hunting and sale of protected species across Liberia.
The confiscated bush meat was later burned by FDA officers in line with wildlife protection regulations and environmental safety measures.
Authorities believe the action sends a strong warning against activities that threaten Liberia’s biodiversity and natural resources.
The alleged owner of the bush meat was arrested and charged by the Liberia National Police following the confiscation.
Officials disclosed that the suspect was later sent to court and paid a fine of US$100 into government revenue.
Environmental officers say illegal hunting and trafficking of protected animals continue to threaten wildlife conservation efforts in several parts of the country.
Community leaders and environmental advocates have welcomed the enforcement action, noting that protecting wildlife is important for tourism, environmental balance, and future generations.
The FDA has meanwhile encouraged residents to support conservation efforts by reporting illegal hunting and trading activities involving protected species.
