River Gee County’s First-ever Public Library to be Inaugurated Early Next Year

RIVER GEE – A modern library valued at US$45,000 is expected to be inaugurated in the southeastern capital city of Fish Town, River Gee County, early next year, Rural Reporters News Network (RRNN) has reliably learned.

In a move to buttress efforts of the Ministry of Education, the River Gee Association based in the Americas (RIGCAA), the financier of the modern library project, is poised to dedicate and turn over to the River Gee County School System the facility currently nearing completion.

When dedicated and turned over, the modern facility will be River Gee County’s foremost public library, which aims to significantly support students’ studies, as well as accommodate the country’s general population in library-related research work.

Construction works on the facility are almost completed, and the library is to be dedicated and turned over in early March of next year by Aloysius S. Benjamin, RIGCAA’s USA-based President, according to the group’s Country Director Henry Teh.

Teh disclosed that RIGCAA has brought into River Gee County two 40-foot containers containing about 22,000 different kinds of books and learning materials meant for the library when completed.

“The project is timely because, since our county’s independence in 2000, it’s difficult for many of our High School students, mainly 12th Graders to pass public exams due to the lack of libraries and laboratories for research purposes. So when this project is dedicated and turned over to them, it will greatly help to support our students’ learning process,” Teh added.

It can be recalled that RIGCAA has in the past helped schools and River Gee County’s health system including donating several reading books and desktop computers to schools in the county, as well as providing medical doctors at River Gee County Referral Hospital and the Gbeapo Health Center with 11 pieces of laptop computers.

Created in 2000, River Gee is one of Liberia’s youngest and smallest counties among its 15 political subdivisions. It is located in the country’s southeastern region, having eight administrative, four statutory, and three political districts. A 2022 Housing and Population Census put River Gee’s population at 124,653, making it one of the least populous counties in Liberia.

Meanwhile, River Gee County Education Officer, Jones S. Nyenpan, has welcomed news of the construction of a modern library to be turned over to county authorities for public use.

He applauded RIGCAA for the project, adding that when turned over, the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Association, will provide support in the area of training for librarians who will manage the facility.
