Community members in Kamatahun and its environs are calling for support to upgrade their market building. Formerly of Kolahun District, Kamatahun is located in Hassala Clan, Wanhassa District. The town has about 1,500 residents and hosts a market that caters to the commercial needs of people from the surrounding towns and villages, including Kolahun and Foya Districts.
The people of Kamatahun have issued a strong call for the construction of a new market building with hand pump and latrine facilities.
The Market Chairlady, Mamasa Kamara said the construction of the new market with the above facilities will improve conditions for local vendors and shoppers. Speaking to the Rural Reporters News Network Correspondent, Madam Kamara outlined the enormous challenges marketers face in the absence of these essential facilities.
She said the lack of a better market hall severely limits the seating capacity for vendors, which she noted impacts their ability to conduct business effectively. She emphasized the need for access to safe drinking water, which has become a pressing issue due to the absence of a hand pump, as well as the necessity for proper sanitation facilities amid open defecation.
Chairlady Kamara pointed out that the Kamatahun market serves as a vital commercial center for the entire Hassala Clan, benefitting over twenty towns and villages, including Kolahun and Foya. “The market’s significance to the surrounding communities makes the upgrading of the market infrastructure a crucial matter”, said Chairlady, Kamara.
She praised the efforts of the local community, stating, “Only Kamatahun Hassala can normally carry out cleaning exercises,” but stressed that more support is needed to enhance the market’s conditions and overall functionality.
Furthermore, Madam Kamara called on the government to prioritize road rehabilitation in the area, citing serious challenges related to poor road conditions that hinder access to the market. She urged authorities to take action to address these pressing issues, which would ultimately benefit the entire region.
As Kamatahun Hassala continues to serve as a key economic hub, the need for better infrastructures cannot be overemphasized, and the community looks to the government, local and international non-governmental organizations for support.
