MONROVIA – The Government of the United States of America through its embassy near Monrovia, has pledged support to working with the new boss of Liberia’s Office for War and Economic Crimes Court (OWECC), Cllr. Jallah A. Barbu.

Following a recommendation from a search committee, based on Cllr. Barbu’s extensive experience and qualifications, he was appointed by President Joseph Boakai over the weekend to head the OWECC, after the man previously nominated to the post, Cllr. Jonathan Massaquoi’s nomination was withdrawn by the Liberia leader reportedly due to public outcry over Cllr, Massaquoi’s human rights record.

In a U.S. Embassy statement released to the press Monday, the U.S. government stated that it looks forward to working with Cllr. Barbu in his new role as Executive Director of Liberia’s OWECC.

The U.S. Embassy statement applauded the Government of Liberia, especially Minister of Justice, N. Oswald Tweh, who the U.S. hails for what it calls an inclusive selection process of the new Executive Director of OWECC for Liberia.

“We stand ready to support Cllr. Barbu and all Liberians as they establish a court to bring justice for the victims of the gravest crimes committed during Liberia’s civil wars,” the U.S. Embassy statement emphasized.

The new Executive Director of the OWECC, according to the Executive Mansion, has a distinguished career that includes serving in roles such as the Head of the Law Reform Commission and as Dean of Liberia’s premier law school, the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law at the University of Liberia.
