Monrovia, Capitol Building-Friday, February 28, 2025- The Liberian Senate has passed an Act to repeal the 2012 Act that established Bomi Community College, to create the Western Region University.

The Senate’s decision was triggered by a report from its joint committee on Education and Public Administration, Judiciary, Claims and Petition, as well as Ways, Means, Finance and Budget recommending the passage of the bill, citing its potential to improve access to higher education, contribute to development in the western region among other things.

The bill when concurred with by the House of Representatives, Bomi Community College will be transformed into Western Region University, based in Tubmanburg, Bomi County with authority to offer bachelor’s degree and professional disciplines.

Additionally, it aims to drive economic growth in the Western Region by developing a skilled population to support key sectors such as agriculture, mining, and healthcare, etc.

Established in 2005 and formally enacted in 2012, Bomi Community College is Liberia’s oldest government-owned community college, awarding Associate of Arts (A.A.) degrees in various fields over a two-year period.

The Western Region which includes Bomi, Gbarpolu, and Grand Cape Mount Counties, is among Liberia’s mineral-rich areas, with a growing population of approximately four hundred and eight thousand, five hundred and sixty-seven inhabitants, majority of whom are young people.

The Senate’s decision to repeal and pass this Act in consonance with Article 29 of the 1986 Constitution of Liberia, which grants the Legislature the authority to enact.
