In a speech marking the occasion, J. Cyrus Saygbe, Acting Director General of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), emphasized the importance of sustainable fisheries management for Liberia’s future.

The new facilities, funded through a partnership between the Government of Liberia and the World Bank, include 28 rooms, 11 classrooms, and state-of-the-art laboratories designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to drive innovation in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.

Saygbe highlighted the significant role the College of Fisheries would play in advancing Liberia’s sustainable fisheries goals, including improved governance, research, and community engagement. He also announced the upcoming launch of a Fisheries Management Information System (FIMS), aimed at streamlining operations and increasing transparency within the sector.

In addition to academic growth, NaFAA plans to introduce practical training opportunities for students, with initiatives such as the construction of fishponds and new fiberglass boats to support the sector’s expansion.

This event underscored Liberia’s commitment to creating a sustainable and thriving fisheries industry, with Saygbe expressing gratitude to the World Bank for its continued support and investment in Liberia’s future.
