Gbarpolu County Faces Challenges in the Fight Against Mpox

Bopolu City, Gbarpolu — Monday, June 9,2025-As Gbarpolu County works tirelessly to combat a recent Mpox outbreak, officials acknowledge they are facing significant challenges in their efforts.

Bennie Clarke, Director of the Community Health Department, explained that limited resources are hampering their response. “Our team is doing everything they can, but shortages of fuel, transportation, and staff motivation are making the fight harder,” he said.

Despite these hurdles, the health team remains committed to protecting their community.

Since the outbreak was first reported on May 28, 2025, three confirmed cases have been identified across different districts. The quick response included isolating patients and tracing contacts, according to County Surveillance Officer Augustus K. Alfred.

As of June 5, 2025, 56 individuals considered to be contacts, who may have been exposed are under close monitoring to prevent further spread.

The health team is also actively raising awareness through collaboration with hospitals, schools, and markets.

Distributing flyers and community engagement efforts are helping residents understand how to stay safe, as shared by County Health Promotion Focal Person Siaffa Willie.

Efforts are underway to secure Mpox vaccines for those at highest risk, especially health workers and contacts. “We have requested vaccines, and once they arrive, we will vaccinate our frontline staff, suspected cases, and contacts,” Mr. Clarke said.

He emphasized that additional support is essential and needed. “We urgently need more supplies, better transportation, and incentives for our staff to sustain our response,” he said. Challenges also include uncooperative contacts, which complicate contact tracing efforts.

Despite these obstacles, the Gbarpolu County Health Team remains determined. They continue to hold meetings, conduct case searches, and educate the community on measures to curb the outbreak.

As of June 2, 2025, Liberia’s National Public Health Institute (NPHIL) reports 71 active Mpox cases nationwide, with zero deaths.

Health experts advise the public to avoid physical contact, wash hands regularly, and report any suspected cases to NPHIL and health authorities.

These steps are vital in the ongoing fight to end the Mpox outbreak according to experts.
