Gbarma District, Gbarpolu County: (September 10, 2025)In a growing health crisis in Western Liberia, women of Dewai Clan in Gbarma District are urgently appealing to the Ministry of Health and the Gbarpolu County Health Team to construct a mini health center in their community.
The women say such a facility is desperately needed to curb the alarming rate of roadside deliveries that continue to endanger the lives of pregnant women and their babies.
Speaking in an interview with Rural Reporters News Network, the women’s spokesperson, Madam Annie Joseph, described the situation as heartbreaking, revealing that women in the clan are forced to give birth on the road once or twice every month due to poor road conditions and the long distances to the nearest health facilities.
Four-Hour Journey to Access Care
Madam Joseph explained that pregnant women must travel an average of four hours to reach the Gbarma Clinic, Lofa Bridge Health Center in Grand Cape Mount County, Sackie Town Clinic, or even Tubmanburg in neighboring Bomi County.
“Too often, women give birth along the road while being rushed to these clinics,” she lamented. “The journey is long, the roads are bad, and many of our women never get full treatment during pregnancy or safe delivery.”
Appeal to Government and Health Authorities
The women of Dewai Clan are now calling on the national government to swiftly intervene by constructing a clinic in their community. According to Madam Joseph, the clan is willing to provide land to support the development.
“We are ready to give out land,” she stressed. “All we ask is for the government and the Ministry of Health to hear our cry and help us reduce these unnecessary risks to our lives and our children.”
Economic Hardship Compounds Struggle
In addition to the health crisis, Madam Joseph highlighted the economic challenges facing women in the clan. She revealed that more than 100 women in Dewai are currently less privileged and struggling to provide for their families.
She called on Senator Amara Konneh and Representative Mustapha Warity of Gbarpolu County to support them with at least L$500,000 to start small businesses.
“This support will help us ease the hardship we face daily,” Madam Joseph said. “We want to be able to take care of ourselves and our children while waiting for government to address the bigger health needs.”
A Plea for Urgent Action
The women’s appeal underscores the dire reality facing many rural communities across Liberia, where poor infrastructure and limited health facilities continue to cost lives.
For Dewai Clan, a mini health center would not only reduce the risk of roadside deliveries but also bring essential healthcare services closer to mothers, children, and the elderly.
