Barclayville, Grand Kru County| March 13, 2026| Liberia’s Minister of Agriculture, J. Alexander Nuetah, along with his delegation, arrived in Barclayville on Thursday, March 12, 2026, as part of a regional tour aimed at strengthening agricultural development in Southeastern Liberia.
The visit forms part of the Ministry’s ongoing engagement with farmers and local authorities in the Southeast to promote government initiatives designed to boost food production and expand tree crop farming.
During the tour, Minister Nuetah disclosed plans for the establishment of coconut seed gardens across four southeastern counties, including RiverCess County, Sinoe County, Maryland County, and Grand Kru County.
According to the Minister, each county will allocate approximately ten acres of government land for the establishment of coconut seed gardens that will produce improved coconut seedlings. The seedlings will later be distributed free of charge to farmers in the region to help expand coconut production and strengthen the local agricultural economy.

“The coconut seed gardens will be established on government land so they remain a public resource. Once the trees begin producing, the seedlings will be distributed to farmers free of charge,” Minister Nuetah earlier told farmers during engagements in the region.
Agriculture authorities say the initiative will begin with seedlings from RiverCess County, where the government has already established a dwarf coconut nursery. The seedlings will first be transported to Sinoe County to establish the initial seed garden before the project expands to other counties in the Southeast, including Grand Kru.
The Agriculture Minister’s visit to Barclayville also provided an opportunity for discussions with local farmers, agricultural stakeholders, and county officials about strengthening food production, supporting farmer groups, and promoting value addition in crops such as cassava and rice.
The coconut seed garden initiative forms part of the government’s broader agricultural development strategy under the Liberians Feed Yourselves Agenda, which seeks to increase domestic food production and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for rural communities across Liberia.
Officials say the Southeast, particularly counties like Grand Kru, has strong potential for coconut cultivation due to its coastal environment and favorable climatic conditions.
