Bomi County Records Major Health Gains in 2025

“More than 128,000 patient visits, sharp reductions in maternal and newborn deaths, and near-universal childhood immunization marked 2025 as one of the strongest years in healthcare delivery in Bomi County, authorities of the County Health Team have disclosed.

Bomi County Health Officer, Dr. Annett Brima-Davis disclosed that 128,270 people accessed health services across the county in 2025, representing an eight percent increase compared to the previous year.

Speaking to the Rural Reporters News Network on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, Dr. Brima-Davis reported a 60 percent decline in maternal deaths, while newborn deaths dropped by 67 percent during the reporting period.

She also announced a 13 percent increase in institutional deliveries, attributing the improvement to enhanced community awareness, expanded access to health facilities, and sustained engagement with pregnant women at the community level.

According to the County Health Officer, childhood immunization coverage reached 99 percent, with children vaccinated against all major preventable diseases, including the recently introduced malaria vaccine.

Dr. Brima-Davis further emphasized that no health facility across Bomi County experienced drug shortages throughout 2025, describing the achievement as a major milestone in strengthening public confidence in the county’s health system.

Providing updates from the community level, Director for Community Health Moses Fomba highlighted significant progress in disease surveillance, response, and treatment.

Mr. Fomba disclosed that 59 suspected monkeypox cases were identified, isolated, and fully treated, with no deaths recorded.

He added that 69 tuberculosis cases were detected and successfully treated, again recording zero fatalities.

According to official data, 11 measles cases were documented without any deaths, while 92 rabies cases received prompt medical attention, with all patients fully recovering.

Despite the gains, health authorities acknowledged ongoing challenges. Both Dr. Brima-Davis and Mr. Fomba cited limited mobility for health workers as a major constraint affecting outreach services, supervision, and emergency response-particularly in hard-to-reach communities.

They also expressed concern over the continued practice of home deliveries conducted by traditional midwives, many of whom fail to refer expectant mothers to nearby health facilities, exposing both mothers and newborns to preventable risks.

The Bomi County Health Team says it remains committed to strengthening community engagement, improving logistics and transportation, and sustaining the progress achieved toward safe, accessible, and quality healthcare for all residents of the county.
