Salayea, Lofa County |May 17, 2026 | The Clan Chief of Gbarlin Clan in Salayea Administrative District, Lofa County, has expressed concern over the limited development benefits reaching local communities despite ongoing mining and logging activities in the area.
Lorpu M. Gbarma said community members continue to face major challenges, including poor infrastructure and limited access to basic services.
According to Chief Gbarma, her leadership role is centered on advocating for the welfare and future of the people of Gbarlin Clan.
She said residents expected mining and logging activities to bring more visible development to their communities.
Speaking recently, the chief explained that she raised these concerns with Momo T. Cyrus during his district tour.
She noted that the construction of a farm-to-market road is currently the main government development project visible in the area.
While residents appreciate the road project, she believes more support is needed to improve living conditions.
Chief Gbarma said several companies are operating within the clan, yet many communities still struggle with development needs such as better roads, services, and opportunities for local people.
She also pointed to what she described as weak coordination between district authorities and clan leadership, saying stronger communication could help improve development planning and community participation.
The chief emphasized that her advocacy is intended to promote sustainable development that will benefit both present and future generations in the clan.
According to her, attempts to engage in issues related to mining activities have not produced the desired results because she was reportedly informed that such matters fall outside her authority as clan chief.
Chief Gbarma is now calling for stronger cooperation among local leaders, companies, and other stakeholders to ensure that natural resource activities lead to meaningful development and improved living conditions for communities in Lofa County.
