Monrovia, Liberia, Tuesday, November 25, 2025- In a bid to bridge the digital divide, Liberia’s Universal Access Fund (UAF) has launched a nationwide initiative to restore mobile network connectivity in rural areas.

The program according to the Liberia Telecommunications Authority aims to repair and maintain abandoned base stations, bringing voice and data services to underserved communities.

LTA said, the move is expected to have a significant impact on the lives of rural residents, who have been without reliable communication services for nearly two years.

Composite of LTA and Ministry of Post and Telecommunication as well as Mobile operators comparing notes ahead of the connection restoration initiative.

“This isn’t just about making calls it’s about safety, education, commerce, and dignity,” said the LTA statement posted on its official Facebook page Tuesday in Monrovia

The government has identified nine inactive base stations in remote areas, which will be repaired and maintained through a collaborative effort between the UAF, Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, and Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA).

The initiative is part of Liberia’s broader efforts to expand telecom infrastructure and promote digital inclusion. With only 7.6% of rural Liberians having access to electricity, the government is exploring sustainable solutions, including solar-powered sites, to support the restoration efforts.

Liberia’s rural network faces significant challenges, including limited infrastructure, high costs, and low digital literacy. The country’s geography, with its extended rainy season and lack of roads, makes it difficult to establish and maintain network connectivity.

As a result, many rural areas lack access to reliable and affordable internet services, hindering economic growth, education, and healthcare.

Efforts are being made to address these challenges, including partnerships between telecom companies and government initiatives to expand network coverage and improve digital literacy.
