Guyanta Town, Gbarpolu County |March 5, 2026| A tragic incident has shaken the community of Guyanta in Bopolu District of Gbarpolu County, where a man in his late 60s, Pa Sumoru Kamara, was killed by an elephant on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
According to reports, Kamara had gone to check his traps in the forest, about 4 hours walking distance from the town, and encountered a mother elephant.
His lifeless body was found with several bruises and visible marks of elephant attack, including waste and feces.
A coroner jury concluded that there was no foul play in his death.
Meanwhile, the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) and local authorities are urging citizens to take precautions as elephants are protected under Liberia’s wildlife conservation laws.
The incident has raised concerns among residents as elephants have been destroying farms in the area, and residents are calling on the FDA to take urgent and necessary action.
Right now, Citizens are frustrated: they can’t kill the elephants due to protection laws, but now an elephant has killed a citizen.
What will the FDA do?
Residents demand preventive measures and compensation for damages, recalling that eight people were recently fined $500 for killing an elephant in Bopolu District.
