Harper, Liberia–A devastating fire incident in Harper, Maryland County, Liberia, has resulted in the total destruction of one residential home late Saturday evening.
The incident occurred at the home of Mr. Daniel Nimley in the Airfield Junction area. On the evening of Saturday, November 8, 2025, as Mr. Nimley and others held their regular club meeting on his front porch, the 4-bedroom house mysteriously broke out in a blaze.
According to eyewitness accounts, a teenage girl next door initially observed smoke coming from the house but reportedly dismissed it. When the smoke persisted for about 15 minutes, she realized the abnormality and immediately raised the alarm.
Unfortunately, the fire quickly escalated and spiraled out of control when well-meaning neighbors opened the interior doors of the house to battle the flames. The blaze subsequently spread to an adjacent home and a popular business, the “Help the Poor Medicine Store,” which also belongs to Mr. Nimley.
Community youths and other residents quickly mobilized and fought back valiantly. Their efforts successfully halted the fire’s spread, and the blaze was eventually brought under control, with no loss of life reported. Tragically, however, nothing inside the Nimley residence was saved. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
Call for Firefighting Equipment
While fire disasters are not as common in Maryland County as in the Monrovia area, when they do occur, they often result in total ruin. This is largely because the Liberia National Fire Service in the county has absolutely no firefighting equipment.
This recent incident powerfully highlights the urgent need for local authorities to procure at least one fire engine and provide the requisite training for personnel to properly respond to such emergencies in the future.
