‎Zwedru City, Grand Gedeh County |Saturday, Dec. 20, 2025|In a significant move for regional education, the Speaker of the 54th National Legislature, Hon. Richard Nagbe Koon, has committed to addressing the critical infrastructure and financial needs of Grand Gedeh University.

‎The pledge came during the Speaker’s official tour of Southeastern Liberia on Wednesday, December 17, where he was met with urgent appeals from both the university’s administration and the student body.

‎Urgent Needs Highlighted

‎During an indoor program held at the university campus, the institution’s leadership and student representatives presented a “wish list” of challenges currently hampering academic excellence.

‎Key issues raised included:

‎ * Persistent Power Outages: The lack of a stable electricity supply.

‎ * Technological Gaps: The absence of high-speed internet required for modern research.

‎ * Student Support: Limited access to international scholarships and financial aid.

‎The President of Grand Gedeh University, Dr. E. Z. Gboeto, emphasized that without a “massive increase” in the institution’s annual budget, maintaining standard operations would remain an uphill battle.

‎The Speaker’s Response: Action and Aid

‎Responding swiftly to these concerns, Speaker Koon announced a collaborative effort with Hon. Jeremiah Gaow Sokan (Representative, Tchien District #1) to purchase and install a new transformer.

‎This move is expected to restore reliable electricity to the county’s premier center for higher learning.

‎In a personal gesture of support, Speaker Koon also announced that he would fund the tuition for 50 returning students for the upcoming academic year, providing immediate relief to families struggling with school fees.

‎National Context: Roads and Development

‎Beyond education, the Speaker used the platform to reaffirm the Unity Party government’s broader agenda. He noted that under the leadership of President Joseph N. Boakai, the administration remains 90% focused on road construction—a priority that he promised would transform the Southeast’s connectivity and economy.
