Voinjama City, Lofa County |Feb. 10, 2026| Government of Liberia has admitted to Voinjama Central prison being overcrowded but at the same time, has promised to build a modern Prison facility shortly.
The Voinjama Central prison was constructed in 1976 for the sole purpose of keeping adjudged criminals cum wrongdoers in jail until they serve their sentences or until they have their day in court.
The facility upon construction, was intended to host forty prisoners found to be in violation cum breach of the organic laws of the Republic of Liberia.
But today’s reality, says otherwise as there are there are more than 80 prisoners currently behind bars at the Voinjama Central prison who were brought from across the County for the commission of various crimes; a situation which has resulted into the unfavorable over crowdedness of the facility.
The Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Justice confirmed that the Prison is overcrowded and there is a need to build a modern facility; better and larger in size to accommodate a bigger number of prisoners than now.
On Monday February 9, 2026 at the Formal Opening of the 10th Judicial Circuit court in Voinjama city, The Ministry of Justice announced plan to build a modern prison facility in Voinjama city, Lofa County.
Even though the Ministry of Justice didn’t mention a specific date to start the project, but according to a proxy from the Ministry, they are critically thinking about the construction of a modern prison facility soon.
Meanwhile, the President of the Lofa Bar Association, Cllr. Sagie F. Kamara Sr. has appealed to Liberia’s Chief Justice, His Honor Yormie Quiqui Gbeisay to establish additional magisterial courts in Lofa County in order to give citizens more access to Justice.
“Your Honor, Yormie Quiqui Gbeisay, the Lofa Bar Association will appreciate if you open additional magisterial courts particularly in Luyeamai and Basewein areas going to Zorzor district” Cllr. Sagie F. Kamara Sr. Said during a remark at the 10th Judicial Circuit court Official opening ceremony in Voinjama City.
In response, the chief Justice of Liberia, His Honor Yormie Quiqui Gbeisay called on those who are graduating from Law Schools to come back home and serve the county. According to his Honor Yormie Quiqui Gbeisay, those who have already graduated should be willing to serve their respective counties in creating additional opportunities within the nation’s judiciary sector thereby leading to the flourishing of access to Justice in rural Liberia.
