Konobo District, Grand Gedeh County–Monday, September 22, 2025-Allegations of massive corruption has emerged against senior officials of the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), following the recent release of a leaked video that has engulfed public attention in southeastern Liberia.
The video, which has gone viral on social media, reportedly links some assistant ministers and inspectors of the Ministry to an illegal scheme in which they allegedly collected USD$ 25,000 from each Ghanaian-owned dredging machine operating illegally along the Cavalla River. The illegal activities are said to expand across Grand Gedeh, River Gee, and Grand Kru Counties; where foreign miners are accused of exploiting Liberia’s natural resources without formal documentation cum official authorization.
In the recording, a man identified as Mr. AB, also known as “Midnight Trouble” claimed he was specifically instructed by certain senior officials not to respect or collaborate with any officials’ assigned MME representatives in Konobo District. His statement has been seen as an act of sedition and had raised concerns about deep-seated corruption and the undermining of lawful government authority in the region.
The Cavalla River has long been a hotspot for illegal gold mining, often linked to environmental destruction and conflicts between locals and foreign miners. The latest revelations have reignited calls from citizens and civil society groups for the government to take swift action against officials implicated in corrupt practices.
Since then, the Ministry of Mines and Energy has not issue any official statement regarding the leaked video or the allegations against its top officials. However, residents of the affected counties are urging President Joseph Boakai’s administration to intervene immediately and restore accountability in the mining sector.
