Bettu Town, Sasstown District |Feb. 16, 2026|A routine fishing expedition turned tragic over the weekend when a 47-year-old fisherman, Kunwon Sieh, drowned in the sea near Bettu Town in Sasstown District, Grand Kru County.
Local authorities confirmed that the incident occurred on Saturday, February 14, 2026. District Commander Patrol Officer Prince Yancey said he responded to the scene at approximately 10:00 p.m. (2200hrs) following reports from community members.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the lifeless body of Mr. Sieh lying along the shoreline. He was dressed in a black T-shirt and black jeans trousers.
Community sources disclosed that the deceased had earlier gone alone to fish in an area widely known for its rocky and hazardous waters.
Preliminary findings from law enforcement indicate that the victim’s canoe may have struck submerged rocks in the fishing zone.
Fellow fishermen informed investigators that the area presents significant dangers, particularly during unstable sea conditions.
Authorities also gathered that Mr. Sieh was not a strong swimmer, which may have contributed to the fatal outcome.
To eliminate any suspicion of foul play, a fifteen-member coroner jury was constituted.
After careful examination and deliberation, the jury concluded that there was no evidence of criminal involvement and ruled that the cause of death was drowning.
The body has since been turned over to the deceased’s brother, Thomas Sieh, for burial arrangements.
The incident has renewed concerns among local fishermen about safety precautions, including the risks of fishing alone and navigating rocky waters without protective equipment.
