Tubmanburg, Liberia- Thursday, Nov. 27, 2025- A wave of public anxiety over Liberia’s HIV statistics may not reflect the true picture – at least not yet.

The Ministry of Health is urging calm after clarifying that the alarming rise in HIV cases recently highlighted by the National AIDS Commission is a projection by UNAIDS, not a current count.

Program Manager of the National AIDS & STI Control Program, Dr. Jonathan Flomo, says while figures shared by Commission Chairperson Dr. Cecelia Nuta estimated that HIV cases could increase from 34,000 in 2024 to 36,000 by 2025, the present confirmed number of people living with HIV in Liberia stands at 32,596, all of whom are receiving treatment.

In an exclusive interview with Rural Reporters News Network Bomi County Correspondent, Dr. Flomo acknowledged the projection but warned that viral statistics circulating on social media; especially those allegedly breaking down numbers by counties and communities are not official and risk fueling stigma and misinformation.

“These figures are not from the National AIDS Commission,” he stressed, cautioning the public against panic and urging those spreading false data to stop.

Instead of fear, Dr. Flomo wants awareness and action.
He encouraged Liberians to take advantage of the free HIV testing and treatment services, available in health facilities across the country. Early testing, he said, remains the strongest path to treatment success and prevention.

He assured the public that the National AIDS & STI Control Program continues to work closely with communities to ensure those who test positive receive support and those who test negative have the tools to remain that way.

The message from the Ministry is clear: Stay informed. Get tested. Trust verified information — not rumors.
