The Liberia Agriculture Commodity Regulatory Authority (LACRA) is intensifying efforts to revitalize the agricultural sector, focusing on bolstering food security and protecting farmers in Grand Gedeh and Lofa counties.

LACRA’s Director General, Dan Saryee, announced this strategic push, emphasizing that it directly supports President Joseph Boakai’s vision for agriculture-led national growth.

Speaking at a gathering here in Grand Gedeh, Director General Saryee confirmed that LACRA is actively addressing critical issues hindering agricultural progress.

These include: Deforestation in farming areas; the problem of illegal migration in farming and instances of un-procedural tax collection by certain revenue officers.

Furthermore, Mr. Sayee revealed that investigations are currently ongoing into claims that locally grown Liberian cocoa is being wrongly labeled as cross-border produce, which hurts local farmers.

In a move to create new business avenues, he announced plans to reopen LACRA offices and launch Liberia Coffee on October 1.

During his inspection tour, Director General Saryee noted that the absence of cocoa exporters in Grand Gedeh is severely impacting local farmers.

He assured the community that concrete steps are being taken to bring exporters back to the region.

The Ministry of Justice, represented by County Attorney E. Wilkins Nah, praised LACRA’s initiative and pledged full legal support to ensure smooth agricultural operations.

Grand Gedeh Superintendent Alex C. Grant also vowed cooperation, urging citizens to actively participate in national development.

Superintendent Grant issued a stern warning to customs officers, emphasizing that collecting taxes within city limits is a form of extortion that disrupts farming activities.

The LACRA Director General’s assessment tour continues this week, with planned stops in Bong, Nimba, and Lofa Counties.

This ongoing effort is part of a broader commitment to revive Liberia’s agricultural sector and promote fair and ethical business practices for all farmers.
