Monrovia, Liberia-September 18, 2025- The United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (SPT) has paid a courtesy call on Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Republic of Liberia.

The high-level visit, held at the Ministry of Justice in Monrovia, formed part of the SPT’s ongoing mission to Liberia, aimed at assessing the country’s efforts in preventing torture and other ill-treatment in places of detention.

During the engagement, the SPT delegation held constructive discussions with Minister Tweh on Liberia’s legal and institutional frameworks related to the protection of human rights, the prevention of torture, and the strengthening of national mechanisms for monitoring detention facilities.

Minister Tweh welcomed the delegation and reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to upholding international human rights standards and enhancing transparency and accountability within the justice and corrections systems.

The courtesy call marks a significant step in strengthening collaboration between Liberia and the United Nations in the ongoing effort to prevent torture and ensure humane treatment for all persons in detention.

Minister Tweh emphasized the government’s willingness to cooperate fully with the SPT and other international partners in advancing reforms and promoting the rule of law.

Justice Minister Tweh was accompanied by Deputy Minister for Administration and Public Safety Cllr. Cora N. Hare Konuwa, Assistant Minister for the Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Atty. Gabriel F. Ndupellar, and Head of Human Rights Section Kutaka Devine Togbah.

Other includes Director of Alternative Dispute Resolution A. Gobah Anderson, Head of the Gender Social Inclusion Unit Maude M. Somah, and Head of the Child Justice Atty. J. Alben Greaves.

This meeting underscores Liberia’s commitment to preventing torture and promoting human rights, and highlights the importance of international cooperation in advancing these goals.
