Barclayville, Liberia—Tuesday, May 20,2025-The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Health, has commenced an urgent health initiative aimed at treating inmates at the Barclayville withholding cell, following the receipt of a substantial consignment of medical supplies, which has been welcomed by prison officials.

Superintendent Moses Allison expressed his gratitude to national government and partners through the Ministry of Health for their timely provision of medical supplies.

He noted that these resources are vital in addressing the pressing healthcare needs of inmates; many of whom have faced challenges in accessing adequate medical attention.

“This support from the government is commendable, especially as we continue to grapple with various challenges in maintaining the health and well-being of our inmates,” Superintendent Allison stated. “The medical supplies will go a long way in helping us offer necessary treatment and improve the overall health conditions within the prison.”

The Bureau of Correction and Rehabilitation Superintendent of the county is quoted as saying; the initiative comes amidst ongoing concerns about the health standards in correctional facilities across Liberia.

Some inmates being screened by the medical team.

He noted that inmates at the Barclayville withholding cell often live in overcrowded conditions which can lead to a range of health issues, from communicable diseases to chronic illnesses that require consistent medical attention; as he described the medical supplies as a positive move.

Health officials are set to work closely with the prison staff to ensure that the medical supplies are utilized effectively. The initiative will include health screenings, treatment for prevalent illnesses, and health education for inmates on personal hygiene and disease prevention.

“I think this is just the beginning of what our office hope will be an ongoing effort or process to safeguard the health of all inmates within our correctional facilities,” Superintendent Moses Allison, voiced out.

The government’s effort to provide medical supplies is a step towards ensuring that inmates receive the care they which reflects the government of Liberia commitment to improving living conditions for inmates and addressing health disparities that often exist within prison systems.
