Fissebu Town, Zorzor Administrative District, Lofa County |May 19, 2026 | A major step in higher education development is taking place in Lofa County as Lofa County University prepares to officially take over CAN-U and transform it into Lofa County University Annex-2.
The official signing ceremony for the Memorandum of Understanding is scheduled for May 20, 2026, at the CAN-U campus in Fissebu Town.
The event is expected to bring together local leaders, educators, administrators, and invited guests to witness what many residents describe as a historic moment for education in the county.
Following the agreement, CAN-U will move from being a private initiative to becoming part of the public university system under the name Lofa County University Annex-2.
Supporters say the transition will help increase access to affordable university education for students in District #5 and other parts of Lofa County and further afield.
The project began in 2021 when nine young people from Electoral District Number 5 launched a campaign to bring higher education closer to rural communities in the county.
Organizers explained that the institution faced many challenges during its early years, including limited infrastructure, accreditation requirements, and financial difficulties.
Despite the obstacles, faculty members and administrators reportedly continued working for months without salaries to keep academic activities running for students.
Community members and supporters praised individuals and groups who provided facilities, academic support, and encouragement to help the institution survive during difficult periods.
Residents say the new partnership represents more than the growth of a university.
They believe it is a strong sign of community determination and an important investment in the future education and development of young people in Lofa County.
