Mary’s Meals Team Crosses Finish Line at Liberia Marathon, Raises Awareness for 3 Million Smiles Campaign

Monrovia, Liberia, October 14, 2025- The streets of Monrovia were filled with excitement on Sunday, October 12, as the Mary’s Meals team joined thousands of runners and walkers to cross the finish line of the Liberia Marathon.

The charity organization’s participation in the event marked another milestone in its efforts to raise awareness and support for its 3-Million Smiles campaign.

The “3 Million Smiles” campaign celebrates Mary’s Meals’ growth from feeding just 200 children in Malawi in 2002 to now reaching over 3 million children across 16 countries.

The campaign highlights the importance of food and education for every child, and the Liberia Marathon provided the perfect platform for Mary’s Meals to share its mission with a wider audience.

Predominantly dressed in the charity’s blue colors, symbolizing hope and unity, the Mary’s Meals team completed the marathon, distributing stickers and selfie frames with the “3 Million Smiles” branding.

The team also shared information about the organization’s mission and impact with runners and walkers who participated in the marathon.

According to Menue Bainda, Communications Manager of Mary’s Meals Liberia, the experience was inspiring.

“It was indeed an inspiring experience for me at the Liberia Marathon on Sunday, October 12th, as I had the chance to speak to some runners about the mission and impact of Mary’s Meals and how they can support the program,” Bainda said. “A valuable lesson I learned is how effective simple branding displays can be at generating interest even with little or no budget.”

Also at the event, Mary’s Meals Human Resource and Learning Development Advisor Thomas Gbuka emphasized the importance of participating in the Liberia Marathon.

“Our participation in today’s event is about participating and networking with other runners from different backgrounds, it’s about team building, and it’s about telling people that Mary’s Meals is feeding more than 3 million children globally, including in Liberia, with life-changing school meals every school day,” Gbuka said.

The Liberia Marathon is a platform that set the stage to share mission; that no child should have to learn on an empty stomach.

Mary’s Meals provides daily school meals to more than 90,000 children across 5 counties in Liberia, encouraging school attendance and helping children to focus and thrive in their studies. The organization’s work in Liberia is making a tangible difference in the lives of thousands of children.

Mary’s Meals has been working in Liberia since 1992, initially providing aid during the country’s civil war. In 2006, the organization began its school feeding program, which now serves over 95,000 children across five counties: Bong, Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, Gbarpolu, and Montserrado.

The program aims to encourage school attendance and improve education outcomes by providing one nutritious meal per day. Mary’s Meals is the sole provider of school feeding in Bong County.

The organization strives to source food locally but sometimes needs to import from other areas due to limited local production. Liberia’s challenges, including poverty, hunger, and limited access to education, make Mary’s Meals’ work crucial in supporting the country’s most vulnerable children.
