Grand Gedeh County – Monday, May 26, 2025 – The Ministry of Health, through the Liberia Board for Nursing and Midwifery, has formally granted full accreditation to the Deanna K. Isaacson School of Midwifery in Grand Gedeh County.

The Deanna K. Isaacson School of Midwifery was founded to educate midwives and in turn receive diplomas upon graduation. In a press conference held on Saturday in Zwedru, Mrs. Sawah K. Shaffa, the School’s Director, shared that obtaining full accreditation was challenging due to the insufficiency of funds.

She expressed gratitude to Health Minister Dr. Louis Kpoto for the financial assistance provided during her county visit earlier this year, as well as to the Ministry of Health and the government for their contributions—both monetary and logistical—that facilitated the accreditation process. This backing has led to significant improvements in the school’s infrastructure for the first time since its establishment.

Among the list of enhancements include upgraded internet access, a better water supply system, and qualified staff. These developments were essential in securing the school’s accreditation.

However, Mrs. Shaffa highlighted on-going challenges, such as the need for solar lighting to protect simulation lab materials, completing the outer fence for better security and access control, and the acquisition of a bus for student transportation to and fro the clinical sites. She urged the government to quickly intervene in addressing these critically important needs.

The Deanna K. Isaacson School of Midwifery is located approximately 3-kilometers from the center of Zwedru and serves students from seven counties, including Grand Gedeh, River Gee, Maryland, Grand Kru, Sinoe, River Cess, and most recently, Grand Bassa.
