Monrovia, Liberia | Jan. 20, 2026 | The Ministry of Local Government is set to launch the second phase of its five-year implementation plan for the Local Government Act (LGA) 2018, marking a significant milestone in the country’s decentralization efforts.

The event, that’s taking place this Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Bella Casa Hotel in Sinkor, will officially kick off the plan’s implementation.

The LGA 2018 is a ten-year plan aimed at strengthening local governance and promoting decentralization in Liberia.

The five-year implementation plan (Phase II) is expected to build on the progress made in the first phase, focusing on key areas such as local government capacity building, infrastructure development, and service delivery.

The launch event brought together stakeholders from government, civil society, and development partners to discuss the plan’s objectives, strategies, and outcomes.

According to Minister Francis Nyumalin, the event will provide an opportunity to showcase the ministry’s commitment to improving local governance and promoting citizen participation in decision-making.

The Local Government Act (LGA) of 2018 is a Liberian law aimed at decentralizing governance and strengthening local government systems.

Key aspects include devolving powers to local authorities (counties, districts, and cities), enhancing citizen participation in decision-making, improving service delivery at local levels, and strengthening local government capacity for development among others.

The Act outlines a ten-year implementation plan, with phased approaches to achieve its objectives. The Ministry of Local Government is leading its implementation, focusing on areas like local governance, infrastructure, and service delivery.
