Executive Mansion, Monrovia- Wednesday, April 09, 2025 -President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. welcomed Mr. Joshua Carter, grandson of the late former U.S. President Jimmy Earl Carter, along with a distinguished delegation from The Carter Center, during a courtesy visit at the Executive Mansion on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

The visit highlighted Carter Center’s decades-long partnership with Liberia, especially in the areas of democracy, peacebuilding, health, and human rights. President Boakai extended his warm appreciation to the Carter family and lauded the legacy of President Jimmy Carter, whose commitment to global humanitarian work continues to positively impact Liberia.

During the meeting, special emphasis was placed on the Center’s pioneering efforts in the field of mental health in Liberia.

President Boakai acknowledged Carter Center’s significant contributions in supporting the Government of Liberia to strengthen mental health services, build local capacity, and reduce stigma through training programs for mental health clinicians and community outreach.

The Liberian Chief Executive noted the importance of sustaining and expanding mental health care across the nation and pledged his Administration’s full support to initiatives that improve the well-being of all Liberians.

Mr. Joshua Carter, for his part, reaffirmed Carter Center’s dedication to deepening its collaboration with Liberia. He praised the Government’s strides in healthcare and governance, and emphasized the Center’s continued commitment to advancing mental health initiatives and democratic development in the country.

Carter Center has been operational in Liberia since the mid-1990s, playing a critical role in election observation, civic education, access to justice, and combating some classes of tropical diseases. Its Mental Health Program, launched in 2010, has trained hundreds of mental health clinicians and remains a cornerstone of its support to Liberia’s public health system.

The late President Jimmy Earl Carter was a true friend of Liberia and this was demonstrated when he paid a state visit to Liberia in on April 03,1978 and ever since then, his Carter Center has tirelessly worked to see Liberia eschew war, violence and wanton destruction.

On December 29, 2024, Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, the 76th governor of Georgia, and recipient of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his post-presidential work, died at his home in Plains, Georgia, after nearly two years in hospice care.
