Buchanan City, Grand Bassa County |Feb. 15, 2026| On Saturday, 14 February 2026, the NEC BOC signed a Communiqué at the close of a five-day Strategic Retreat held in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, recommitting itself to strengthened leadership, deeper reflection, constructive dialogue, and collaborative action.
The Commissioners underscored integrity, unity, teamwork, and effective leadership as guiding principles for their stewardship of the Commission.
Held under the theme, ‘Strengthening Leadership, Law, and Collaboration for Credible Electoral Governance,’ the Retreat provided an opportunity to draw valuable lessons from key facilitators, who emphasized ethical leadership, institutional cohesion, and open communication within the Electoral Management Body (EMB).
Led by the Chairperson, Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah, each Commissioner delivered a strong statement reinforcing collective responsibility and renewed commitment to ethical leadership and the statutory mandate of the BOC.
The Co-Chairperson, Cllr. P. Teplah Reeves, stressed the importance of clear and consistent communication among Board members, while Commissioner Boakai A. Dukuly encouraged leadership by example at the level of the BOC.
Commissioners Barsee Leo Kpangbai, Floyd O. Sayor, Cllr. Ernestine Morgan Awar, and Josephine Kou Gaye emphasized unity, sustained team building, and unwavering adherence to the Commission’s mandate.
The Communiqué further reaffirmed that ‘credible elections remain central to Liberia’s democratic stability, peace, and development.’
All seven Commissioners signed the Communiqué, symbolizing their shared value, resolve to advance transparent, accountable, and credible electoral governance.
Delivering a statement on behalf of the Head of the European Union in Liberia to Liberia at the close of the Retreat, the Chief Technical Advisor of the UNDP Liberia Electoral Support Project, Katherine Green, lauded the Commission for undertaking the Retreat.
The EU statement described the gathering as a vital moment of reflection that will help ensure the Commission remains trusted and that electoral processes continue to be conducted in accordance with ethical principles and international standards.
The EU also reaffirmed its continued support to NEC-Liberia.
UNDP-Liberia Resident Representative, Aliou Mamadou DIA, who also spoke during the week at the NEC BOC Retreat, emphasized that it was a period for deep reflection and renewed commitment to the legacy upon which the Commission will thrive in future electoral processes.
Mr. DIA challenged NEC Commissioners to strengthen institutional resilience through ethical leadership, mutual respect, collective purpose, and unity.
The Retreat drew striking lessons from other key facilitators, including Prof. Wilson Tarpeh, Rev. Foday Karpeh, Cllr. Bornor Varmah, Chairman of the Law Reform Commission, veteran Liberian journalist, Frank B. Sainworla, Cllr. Finley Y. Karngar, Chairperson of the Office of the Ombudsman, and Cllr. Cyril Jones of the Jones and Jones Law Firm.
Meanwhile, the NEC Board of Commissioners has instructed the Executive Director /Head of Secretariat, Mr. Anthony K. Sengbe, to organize a similar retreat for Directors of all Sections within the Commission, aimed at strengthening institutional cohesion and operational effectiveness.
In conclusion, it is therefore imperative to highlight and state that as the Board of Commissioners (BOC) of the National Elections Commission of Liberia (NEC-Liberia) sets its sights higher, the future of Liberia’s electoral processes remains firmly on course.
